Disappointing POE Camera

Let me start by stating that I had to return this IP camera. The major reason is that it does not have exposure compensation and it has a manual focus. It is configured for indoor ambient light settings. Not too bright and not too dim. I also realized that the camera/CCD chip does not have a sufficient dynamic range to capure a scene with both bright and dard areas. If this is a requirement, then this camera will not perform for you.

The Trendnet software does provide image brightness controls but the controls appear to operate on the received image not setting the camera’s exposure settings. Hence an over exposed image will remain overexposed.

TrendNet has Setup program on the CD which installs a setup program! This is rather confusing. Installation is clumsy but with patience, I got it configured. The Power over Ethernet worked perfectly.

Based on physical construction, including the pacement of the connectors, the TrendNet Camera appears to be a Dlink camera. In fact using Blue Iris Video Monitoring software, the camera responds as if it is a DLink DCS-3410 or 2102.

The focus is manual. A real PITA when you must mount it and then have someone monitor the video and keep farting with the focus. And given the 1-2 second delay in the video, its easy to keep missing the focus point.
Trendnet also provides a simple but good mounting bracket.

I also tried out their user support. I connected to a person relatively quickly. I offer them the opportunity to the tech support person to connect directly to the camera remotely which they declined (I configured port forwarding on my router). Their first fix for the over exposure was to place the camera in night mode!! What?? That would make it even more over exposed! They ignored my comment. Put me on hold and when they came back and she said it can’t be used for viewing outside.

Perhaps I’ve been spoiled by the Toshiba line of IP cameras. They are a lot more expensive, but their engineering, software and hardware is top notch compared to TrendNet. So if your needs are for video where the lighting does not vary much from ambient indoor lighting, and you can only afford $200, this camera may work for you.

Great basic camera!

I have the 4x zoom model and it is easy to set up and use. I mounted mine in an outdoor camera housing to monitor the outside of my home. I have no trouble connecting to it from work and the picture is clear. The 4x zoom does cause the picture to get grainy (as expected), but I don’t have much use for the zoom as I am looking for an overall view of the area. I had no trouble focusing the camera with my laptop connected to my home network – any further and the delay would have made focusing a pain. The microphone works fine and I’m also satisfied with it’s performance in low light. The low-watt bulb that I have in my porch light provides enough light for the camera to view the entire porch area late at night. When the motion flood lights are activated, there is more than enough light for the camera. This is a good choice for a basic internet security camera.

Nice Camera

The quality of this camera is what you would expect for the price, regular. The default settings are not ok for use outdoor, and you can’t change that unless you update the firmware of the device, which is what we did and after that i worked ok indoor and outdoor (we didn’t knew that the firmware fixed this problem since we didn’t find anything that suggested it but thanks to that we didn’t have to return it or use it only indoor).
You can access the camera from any navigator (we tried IE, FF and Opera), but some advanced functions are only available in IE.
The zoom is not that useful since its just digital and the image resolution is not very good.
The software detects the camera without problem even if you don’t know it’s IP so it save us a couple of times from rebooting it.
We’ve tried for a few days now and everything seems ok even when using it with ddns.

Wonderful ‘pocketable’ dSLR

I have used nearly every OLYMPUS dSLR (exception being the E-300 & E-400). I use the Olympus E-3 for my paid work and find it a superb camera. But like many of you, I want a camera with SLR quality to carry around minus the weight of my workhorse E-3. Enter the E-420, an absolute jewel of a camera whose IQ is top notch especially when compared to its market segment (Canon Rebels, Nikon D40/D60/D80, Pentax K200D, etc.). The gradation is fantastic, rivaling even my E-3. And coupling this, the world’s smallest dSLR body with the new Pancake lens (25mm f/2.8, equivalant to 50mm in Full Frame) and you have a near ‘pocketable’ (depends on the size of the pocket) dSLR capable of taking phenomenal photos. Now, is it a world beater? No. But it isn’t meant to be. It is meant for folks who want SMALL, but for whom Image Quality MATTERS. And here, it scores a perfect 10 (or 5 STARS in this case). As to the negative comment about focus points (you want 51 focus points, go spend 5K on the Nikon D3… truly a great camera, but marketed to a different segment of shutterbugs). And I have no idea what the reviewer was talking about poor performance in low light (this is much more of a lens issue on any camera), all I can say is NONSENSE. It does fine. No better and certainly no worse than any of the other 20+ dSLRs I’ve shot with. In fact, I used it as a 2nd camera during a 50th wedding anniversary party I was hired to shoot. Used it Indoors. It did great. I got great photos and the client doesn’t know what came out of the E-3 or the E-420. The images are that good. So if you want ‘pocketable’, but you do want to compromise on Image Quality, then go ahead and pick this baby up. The likelihood of Buyer’s Remorse is far smaller than this camera. After that, You just do one thing more. …Enjoy.

Sold my Canon XTi for this delightful *gem* of a camera. Love it!

I have had this E-420 with Zuiko 25mm Pancake for a month now and it is simply superb.

I sold my Canon XTi and SD700IS because I wanted a smaller/lighter system without sacrificing DSLR image quality. I got portability with my Canon P&S but not the image quality; I got DSLR image quality with the Canon DSLR but not the portability. The question was: What should I do? Well, the timing of the release of this camera/lens was perfect. And the choice to get this camera was the best choice I have made with regards to photography. Now I have the smallest, lightest DSLR camera in the world with great image quality to match any 10MP entry-level DSLR. Having owned this camera for over a month now, I have realised that I am taking 2-3 times more photographs than ever before simply because it is such a joy to take out-and-about (perfect for street photography) and the results I am getting are excellent. From using this camera, I am looking forward to exploring more of Olympus’s infamous Zuiko lenses which are some of the best digital lenses in the industry. I tried the 12-60mm lens with the E-420 the other day and boy was the auto-focus speed fast! The continuous shooting is fast too: 3-4 shots (raw+super-fine jpegs) per second — very impressive.

Because of this purchase my passion for photography has been ignited which is priceless in itself. Photography should be about taking photos without feeling restricted by what you hold in your hands. This camera gives me that freedom and confidence that I can take great photos wherever I am. Photography should be FUN! And it is certainly FUN to use this camera.

To conclude, do your research on the net on this camera and look at many photos. I am sure you will discover many other happy new owners of this camera. I have heard even some are using it not as a back-up to their pro gear but as a replacement because it is so portable! A great recommendation if ever you need one.

I love my E420, but it does have a few issues

I purchased this camera in hopes of replacing my point and shoot. In the past, I have just missed too many shots because my point and shoot was too slow, or because it focused on the wrong object, or just had the wrong exposure. So I was looking for small DSLR, and when this camera came out with the pancake lens, I wanted to give it a try. My personal experience has been with a few different kinds of cameras, Canon A2, Yashica T4, Canon S100, Canon Digital Rebel, and a Minolta G500. I rated this camera as a single unit consisting of the body and the 25mm f/2.8 pancake lens. My tests have taken about 3 weeks and include two family vacations.

Strengths:
First off, the camera feels great. Even though it is small, it feels solid, it has a nice smooth shutter with a pleasing sound. The camera feels good in my hands. It feels better than my Digital Rebel. I have had two instances in which someone else dropped the camera from a height of 3 feet, and it has been fine. I have carried it in all kinds of bags with other gear and it appears to be very sturdy.
The quality of the images I get is very good. In day light or normal indoor light, I get great images. The only limit on the quality is the skill of the photographer. I took a number of shots in low light (campfires and candle light), and those pictures look OK but not great. In those conditions I got pictures better than my point and shoot cameras, but not as good as I get with my Digital Rebel with an f/1.4 lens. I am not a professional photographer, so my standards may not be all that high, but I love the pictures I get.
The biggest pleasant surprise of this camera was the Info display. There is an “Info” button that bring us a display showing all of the important settings. And the special part is that you can easily navigate to any setting and change it directly from that mode. I really love this. It makes it very easy to change the metering mode, and to check if I left the camera in any strange mode (IS0 1600, or manual focus mode).
I have also given the camera to my wife and daughters to use. They were able to use it without any problems.
I thought the Auto ISO selection works quite well. It only boosts the ISO when required.
Finally, I find this camera to be lots of fun. I usually find any new camera to be fun, but this one has really captured my imagination. I felt the same way about the Digital Rebel when I first purchased it. I find myself taking it many places and getting lots of good pictures.

Weaknesses and issues:
My main complaint is that the camera is not small enough to replace my point and shoot. This is not a defect, just a realization on my part that the worlds smallest DSLR is not small enough. My next issue is that some pictures do not have the subject in proper focus. This camera makes fewer autofocus mistakes than a point and shoot, but my Digital Rebel does better. I suspect this is a function of the 3 focus points, but I don’t know for sure.
I tried to focus the camera manually, but I was not able to reliably get the subject in focus. I am not great at focusing manually, but this camera did not make it easy.
The E420 does have a live view mode, that allows you to compose the picture using the LCD. I was eager to try this, and I found it very disappointing. After pressing the shutter, the camera moves the lens through a wide range of focus points before taking the picture. So the time it takes to the capture the picture is way too long. Sadly, this really defeats my interest in live view. I was able to improve the shot time by changing the auto focus mode, but it’s still not fast.
Finally, I have some smaller gripes. None of these is a terrible problem, but they did annoy me. First, Olympus includes an eye piece cover, and they sized it such that it fits into the hot shoe. Sadly, it fails out too easily, and I have almost lost it several times.
Face detection seems like a good idea, but it is slow enough that I do not use it.
After using the camera to take pictures of the stars at night, I mistakenly left the focus mode in manual, and the ISO set to 1600. Sadly, neither of those settings are visible in the view finder so I took quit a few shots that had out of focus subjects and a grainy appearance.
The lens cap must be screwed off. I would prefer one that was removed by a pinch.
Finally, there is one really odd item. The focus ring on the camera is not physically attached to the lens elements. This means that moving the ring does nothing if you are in the fully automatic modes, and it means that you do not get any physical feedback when you have reached the end of the focus range. While this is not a terrible problem, it really seemed weird to me.

I’ve retired my F5

I’ve been waiting for a long time to finally switch to digital. For the last four years, I’ve shot 35mm transparencies and scanned them with a film scanner. For me, switching to a digital SLR (and justifying the expense of these cameras) meant getting all the functionality and performance I came to expect with my F5 and images that I could easily print at 13×19 without any (or much) interpolation.

The D2X does all of this, and continues to blow me away each time I use it. Here’s my general highlights of what I find important;

1) Build quality and ergonomics are outstanding. The viewfinder image is bright and I can manually focus my lenses in most situations if I want to. I don’t have huge hands, so some of the controls require a little stretch, but nothing that is too difficult to manage.

2) The 3D Matrix II meter is AWESOME. I get great exposures, even better than my F5. In addition, the Auto whitebalance is excellent. It is possible to fool it, but it gets the situation right 95% of the time, especially outdoors.

3) Autofocus is incredible. The 11-point AF system gives me MUCH better frame coverage than I had with the F5. It’s also more sensitive and faster to aquire focus, even in low-light situations. Although there are reports out there about focusing issues with the D2X, my camera does not have any problems. What I HAVE discovered, however, is that it’s REALLY EASY for the camera to lock-on to an object that is slightly offset from where the focus indicator is. This is partly due to operator error– you have to be really careful with your technique, and the fact that the actual AF sensors are MUCH larger than the little reticles in the viewfinder. At least I can check my image on the LCD to see if I need to redo it.

4) The LCD and camera menus are great. More custom settings than anyone could imagine, but they are easily navigated and you can group them in banks. The camera also has the nice ability to recall the last several functions you modified, so it’s easy to get back to where you were if you change something.

5) Battery life is excellent. The Li-ion battery is small and light, and I routinely get about 700-900 images in one charge. WAY better than my F5!

6) Image quality. Nothing short of outstanding. This camera can out-resolve some of my lesser lenses. I REALLY can see the difference between hand-held and tripod-mounted shots if I’m not careful. I have as much resolution as I could possibly need. NOISE: I don’t have any problems using the D2X all the way up to ISO 800. In fact, compared to ISO 400 slide film, there is less noise with the D2X at HI-1 (ISO 1600) than film grain at comparable ISOs. At ISO 640 or less, there really isn’t any noise issues at all. Anyone who says otherwise is either reading too many test results or pixel-peeping. Images viewed at a normal distance look FANTASTIC.

In summary, the D2X is a total replacement IMO for slide film. It may even compete with medium-format in terms of resolution. This camera is a tool for professionals, and it will DEFINITELY expose any flaws in your technique or lenses. That being said, I gotta go work on my technique some more!

Awesome, but Demanding

All of the great things you see in the other reviews are true. This is a fabulous camera with outstanding capabilities. It is also a very demanding camera. It is demanding of your shooting techniques. It is demanding of the lens you use with it. It is demanding of computer capabilities.

This camera captures such incredible detail that it demands proper handholding techniques. This is complicated by the heft of the camera. I upgraded from a D70 and thought I had pretty good technique, but it actually took several weeks of effort to improve and really get tack sharp images. I thought there was a problem with the focus on the camera until I realized images taken on a tripod were perfect.

The true capabilities of the camera only come through when used with professional-level glass. I had used both a Tamron 28-300 zoom, a very good lens, and a Nikon 70-200mm VR lens on the D70 and, obviously, the Nikon VR lens was better. But, the difference between the same two lenses on the D2X is unbelievable.

This camera will also place demands on the computer equipment and accessories. Be ready to upgrade to 4gb memory cards. Also, be sure your computer has the RAM to handle manipulating 70mb files. If you use Photoshop and create many layers, be ready for the file size several times that size. In addition to memory, you will need to have LOTS of hard drive space for all of the images you will be creating.

I can recommend this camera to anyone wanting a professional-level DSLR. Just be aware of the demands of the camera and have the supporting equipment necessary so that your experience is satisfying, not frustrating.

A wonderful pro camera in every respect

I am going to keep this review short and sweet, rather than go on about every wonderful aspect of the camera. You can tell a lot about the camera simply by reading the specs, but they do not tell the whole story.

PROS;

-12MP have a lot of room to crop, I can crop down to 1/3 of the picture and there is still enough info for a decent 13×19 print.

- Images are clean and smooth. I only shoot at ISO 100-200 and the images are noise free for all normal purposes.

-GREAT COLORS. I am upgrading from a D70 and the colors are much improved. The D70 had a tendencey to wash greens, while the D2x has wonderful colors.

(This is the part that really never makes it to the specs)

- Responsiveness/ Handling. Nikon has always had the edge in ergonometrics, but the D2x/H take this to a new level. I have average sized hands and everything is right where it should be. The best thing is how everything happens INSTANTLY. You press “AF-ON” the picture is in focus. The viewfinder is beautiful and bright. The mirror blackout is so short you never see it go black in Single frame mode.

-Two cameras in one. You can comapre this camera to the Canon 1Ds Mk II for high res landscapes and all that…AND you can compare it to the 1D Mk II for 8FPS sports action in HSC mode.

CONS:

-It’s big. This is not a small camera, in fact it’s pretty huge and heavy.

-It’s expensive. (I think it is worth every penny….Well most anyway)

-It demands good lenses to perform best. The D2x can resolve more than many consumer lenses, so wait until you have good enough glass to justify the D2x.

CONCLUSION:

Great camera for just about anything, if you have five grand go for it, you will never look back!

Great little security monitor

I purchased this as an in wall security monitor for my security cameras. Works beautifully. Only complaints are that it doesn’t come with AC wall converter (its a challenge to figure out what to buy) and screen resolution is 800 x 600 max. Tried email to vendor on converter, but they never replied.

Great Monitor Screen

I now have 2 of these screens in use as on-podium monitor screens (I built an adjustable framework to hold the screen) taking feeds from Laptop or Video sources. This allows the speaker to see what is on the screen(s) behind him/her without having to crane their neck to see it. We also use it as a form of teleprompter to send a pre-written speech, so notes are not necessary. I have run these off both power supply and battery pack without problems. Because they are not attached to the podiums, they do get bumped around a bit, but still work great. If you need a good inexpensive screen, this is a great selection. Note: It can work as a testing monitor for video signals as well. This is helpful when you can’t see the destination screen.

a slightly disappointing effort from Tamrac…

About a million manufacturers make waist packs, and initially I was looking at stuff by Jansport and High Sierra for something cool. I own several Tamrac camera bags, but had no idea they also made waist packs. Looking at this item, $18 seemed to be a lot for what it appeared to be. An Amazon merchant had one for sale for about seven bucks including shipping, so based on Tamarac’s reputation for producing quality products, I decided to take a chance.

The 5525 Adventure Photo Hip Pack, is well-constructed, in keeping with Tamrac’s high quality standards. Yet unlike their camera bags, there really isn’t much that is special about this pack. There are only two compartments, one in the front, and the main compartment behind it. Many waist packs have a third compartment on the backside that rests against the body, but this one does not.

One plus is that there is a nice layer of padding on the cover, and in the panels of the main compartment, which should be quite beneficial when carrying a phone, camera, or other electronic device. Inside the main compartment are two fairly deep pockets, for segregating items. There is no padding in the front panel of the front compartment. The nylon belt is rather narrow, at only one inch wide. A belt 1.2 inch or wider, would be preferred. The belt can extend to fit a waistline of about 45 inches.

Most don’t think about it, but one of the keys to durability of a hip pack is actually the belt clip. If your clip happens to break, replacement could be problem. The clip on this pack looks similar to the kind of clip found on many of Tamrac’s camera bags (minus the Tamrac logo), and hopefully is durable.

The Adventure Photo Hip Pack is well made, but may not be worth the premium price. With a little more effort, a third compartment (which I would like to have) could have been provided. The thin belt gives the pack a cheapo look, and may tend to “bite” into the flesh for those that are a little chubby. Having paid seven bucks, I’m not too upset, but I can’t really recommend this product at $18. Tamrac makes great camera bags, but I would look elsewhere for a hip pack.

Perfect camera bag. Holds everything you’d need for use with a compact camera. Very well put together. Holds even large compact cameras like the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ4S 8.1MP Digital Camera with 10x Wide Angle MEGA Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver).

Nice hip pack – matches Tamrac photo bag perfectly great 4 filters etc

Like many shutterbugs, my camera bag tends to take on a life of its own as I continue to add equipment. The most recent casualty were filters, cleaners and the other small accessories that take up a surpring amoung of space despite a small footprint. I already own (and enjoy) the Tamrac camera bag – also red and black – so decided to give this a try. It’s well built and contains perfectly sized pockets to put filters into, cleaning cloths and pens plus other associated small photo or personal items. Well made with the same level of Tamrac quality you have come to expect. Much nicer than most hip bags and designed with the photographer in mind. Excellent value. Solid zippers, easy to use, connect well. Secure.
